When I read this quote I thought that it was very offensive, I thought that once again someone was harassing women and blaming them; once again the victims were double victims... but wait!
I think that what Mr Stephen Lewis is trying to tell us is that women's health is in their own hands. It is our responsibility to take control of our bodies and care about our health. Many women, including a number of my friends, are afraid to talk with their partners about using protection because they think that they will lose them.
Another thing that Mr. Lewis said that impressed me is that the best medicine for a woman in Africa right now is to be single - not to have a husband who will infect her. I read in the blog 'La Maga Hoy' about companies who arrange for men to go on apparent business trips so that they can have sex, and when they return they put their wives' health in jeopardy. So Mr. Lewis is right to say that women are better off being single...scary
Another thing that I learned is how huge is the problem in Africa and how important is the work that people like Lewis are doing in creating global awareness of the problem, and making the difference.
Now as a woman I'm going to talk more about this issue with young girls and to see what I can do in Canada to help all those women in Africa. I hear that there is a large organisation in Canada that does work based on the ideas of Stephen Lewis... because women's health is our struggle.
Cuando lei esta frase, pense que era muy ofensiva, que insultaba a las mujeres, y una vez eran doblemente victimizadas... pero, pensandolo bien lo que Stephen Lewis esta tratando de decirnos es que la salud de las mujeres esta en nuestras propias manos. Es nuestra responsabilidad tomar control de nuestros cuerpos y cuidar de nuestra salud. Muchas mujeres, incluyendo a mis amigas, tienen miedo de hablar con sus esposos y parejas acerca de usar proteccion, porque piensan que los perderan por siempre, asi que ahi estan calladitas.
Otra cosa que menciono Stephen Lewis y que me impresiono terriblemente es que la mejor medicina para una mujer en Africa es estar sin esposo o pareja... es estar ella sola para evitar ser infectada por su esposo. Esto trajo a colacion un post muy viejito que lei en ' la Maga Hoy ' sobre las compañías que prestan el servicio de viajes de negocios para esposos infieles (haga click en el link para leerlo), y de este modo puedan tener su escape sexual. Sin embargo, pongamonos a pensar en el riesgo que estos senores corren, y cuando llegan a sus hogares ponen en riesgo la salud de sus esposas. En este caso, pienso que Stephen Lewis tiene toda la razón al decir que es mejor estar sin esposo... esto si que esta que arde.
Otra cosa que el menciono fue el gran problema en Africa, es un problema fuera de proporciones, y el esta trabajando en esta causa. Eso me hace valorar todo el esfuerzo que el pone al educar a la poblacion en los riesgos de contraer el SIDA. Es por ello que a partir de este momento, no voy a perder oportunidad de hablar con jovenes acerca de esto, y vere que es lo puedo hacer en Canada para aportar mi granito de arena.
